Caring for Someone With Parkinson's: A Practical Guide

Caring for Someone With Parkinson's: A Practical Guide

Parkinson's disease is progressive, and its impact changes over time. The right support at home can make a significant difference to quality of life, for the person living with the condition and for the family around them.

Movement and mobility

Tremors, stiffness and slower movement are common features of Parkinson's. Our carers are trained to give plenty of time for tasks, to avoid rushing, and to use gentle prompts and cueing techniques, such as counting steps or using visual markers on the floor, to help with movement and reduce the risk of falls.

Home safety is also important: we carry out a simple review of the home environment and can advise on aids and adaptations that make moving around safer.

Medication timing is critical

Parkinson's medication must be taken at precise times to work effectively. A missed or late dose can cause a significant deterioration in symptoms. Our carers work closely with care plans to ensure medication is given exactly on time, every time, and they know to flag any concerns to the family or GP straight away.

Emotional support

Living with Parkinson's can be frustrating and isolating, particularly as communication becomes more difficult. Carers who are patient, warm and genuinely interested in the person, not just the tasks, make a profound difference to emotional wellbeing.
