Choosing End of Life Care at Home: What Families Should Know

Facing the end of a loved one's life is one of the hardest things a family goes through. Many people, given the choice, would prefer to be at home rather than in a hospital or hospice, surrounded by familiar things and the people they love. End of life care at home is about making that possible with dignity, comfort and proper support.
What end of life care at home involves
Care is centred entirely on comfort: managing symptoms, supporting mobility and personal care with great gentleness, and ensuring medication is given accurately and on time. Carers work alongside district nurses, hospice teams and GPs, so care at home is properly coordinated with the wider medical support already in place.
Visits can range from a few hours a day to full-time live-in care, depending on what is needed, and can be increased quickly as circumstances change.
Emotional support matters just as much
This stage is not only physical. Our carers are trained to provide calm, compassionate emotional support, for the person receiving care and for the family around them. Sometimes that means quiet companionship; sometimes it means simply being a steady, reassuring presence in a difficult time.
Supporting the family too
Having trusted carers in the home gives family members space to simply be present as a husband, wife, son or daughter, rather than having to manage every practical task alone. We understand how sensitive this time is, and we are happy to talk it through gently, whenever you are ready, with no pressure at all.
